The Coolest Things Technology Has Up It's Sleeve In 2014

With every new year, billionaires and scientists always promise more advanced and flashy technology. In this article, claims such as space tours and dark matter existence are being made, and the technology discussed in this article is simply mind blowing.

Technology discussed in this article includes electric cars, space tourism, wind power, Mars exploration, synthetic biology, wearable technology, dark matter, and crowd-funding. Wind power, wearable technology, and electric cars are expected to become staples to many companies and Americans due to their reliability and functionality. If you know anything about physics, you would know that not very many advances have been made in the field since Roman scientists practically invented the field, but nonetheless, dark matter is sure to be a hit in 2014. Crowd-funding is a new way for online customers to buy equity, and synthetic biology is on the way to the top due to it's ability of gene splicing, using stem cells, etc.

The article relates to my experiences in my classes since it mentions synthetic biology. For my digital essay, I chose to research genetic engineering, which is one of my favorite topics. For the digital essay, we had to narrate our speech, use pictures from a creative commons web source, and put it all into a short movie that is to be presented to the class. Its a happy coincidence that my essay parallels with this article, and I find stem cell research and synthetic biology to be extremely fascinating.

I'm all for the technology mentioned in this article, and I hope all of it gets initiated by billionaires and geniuses. I'm excited for the advancements in technology, and I can't wait to see what 2014 holds for the field of science and technology. All of this affects me because I will probably have to do an essay or something on one of these gadgets (which would be great if I could do further research on synthetic biology).

What is the central idea of the passage and how is it developed and refined throughout the selection? There really is no "central" idea to this article, due to the numerous topics listed, but if I had to define and idea, it would be technology and science. The topics range from electric cars and wind power, which integrate both science and technology. The author states, "From wearable technology to space tourism, 2014 will be a year of significant technological leaps" (McNicoll). From this quote, it is apparent that the author has the same central idea as I do.

  1. Kate, I think it is really neat how this article parallels with your essay. I personally don't like science, but this is pretty cool. If I may ask, what was your stance on genetic engineering? I think this blog post is short and sweet and really organized. More information on this topic would be nice. Keep up the good work!
